Does Your Teen Use “Liquid Courage”?
In 2015 the Monitoring the Future Survey reported 10% of eighth graders and 35% of twelfth graders drank during the previous 30-day period. Adolescence is a time of intense emotions and unregulated hormones as puberty and other biological changes are occurring. The emotionally numbing effects of alcohol (aka “liquid courage”) coupled with the undeveloped adolescent brain creates the perfect mix of ingredients for poor decision making. Alcohol is a topic we have to discuss with teens. Trust your gut if it’s telling you to address the issue of underage drinking with your teen.
